Holidays in Sirmione - Garda Lake
Thanks to the favourable natural position of Sirmione on Garda Lake, its many historical ages have given archaeologists and historians the opportunity to carry out new studies and discoveries. The well-known history of the peninsula starts in the second millenium B.C., the Bronze Age. The lake dwellings that spread out from Salò to Garda have been famous since the nineteen century. In particular, in lower Garda, three submerged sites have been found: in the Maraschina lake area (Peschiera Municipality) in 1971, in the Galeazzi port lake area (Sirmione Municipality) and San Francesco (Desenzano Municipality) in 1976. Naturalistic, historical and archeological amenities are not the only features that characterize Sirmione: the warm sulphide spa Bojola was well-known since the Renaissance; it spurts out from the depth 250 metres from the eastern shore. But only in 1896 the water could be canalized and used at its source temperature and since then the spa activity of Sirmione enlarged and became famous all over Europe. In the twentieth century, from the touristic point of view, Sirmione has again become famous as it had been in the first century B.C.: the Roman buildings whose ruins have been discovered were “holiday homes” of rich families belonging to that area. For many centuries Sirmione was visited by tourists who were attracted from its natural beauty and history, but the hotels, villas, holiday homes and touristic facilities were built only during the second post-war period.
